PAP Smear & HPV Testing

Cervical Cancer & Pap Smear:

A: Cervical Cancer Is Sexually Transmitted Disease

Most of the cervical cancer is associated with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) serotypes 16, 18.

HPV is transmitted via sexual route.

B. Cervical Cancer Is Treatable IF spotted early.

Cervical cancer does not develop overnight, in most cases it is growing over the course of years.

PAP Smear can detect early changes in cervix that are associated with developing cancer.

PAP Smears are combined with or replaced with HPV testing in order to increase diagnostic value.

C. Cervical Cancer Is Preventable.

HPV vaccines (Gardasil) are effective in preventing HPV related cancer, and are widely available for young women and men.

PAP SMEARS: WHO, WHEN AND HOW OFTEN?

ACOG revises their recommendation periodically and as of 2021: Healthy women ages 21 - 65 should have periodic screening.

PAP smears / HPV Testing are not recommended for women before age 21 or who have never been sexually active.

Healthy Women 21-30 are recommended to have cytology only (PAP Smear) every 3 years.

Healthy Women 30-65 can continue PAP q3yrs or do FDA approved HPV test or combo PAP/HPV every 5 years!

IF PAP / HPV IS POSITIVE: we will refer you to OB-GYN for treatment and or close follow-up

IF PAP / HPV IS POSITIVE: we will see you at next recommended screening point 3-5years later

WHAT DOES HIGH RISK HPV POSITIVE MEAN?

Being hrHPV positive is not same as having cervical cancer.

Most women successfully clear HPV on their own over time.

In this cases simple follow-up testing until the resolution is whats ideal.

WHAT DOES ABNORMAL PAP SMEAR CYTOLOGY MEAN?

Cervical Cancer has stages of development and the earlier it is spotted the better are the chances for cure.

PAP test (cytology) can spot abnormal cells very early on, in which cases simple freezing procedures can help clear the disease.

In more advanced cases OB-GYN specialists have more advanced tools to cut out / destroy the badly affected cells.
