Itching, burning, and foul-smelling discharges are all recognizable signs that you may have a vaginal infection. While these symptoms often suggest a yeast infection, other conditions can mimic many of the same symptoms. To ensure your peace of mind, it’s important to identify the cause. At AllCare, our dedicated urgent care physicians can offer a precise diagnosis and a treatment plan for vaginal infections, ensuring you feel comfortable every step of the way.
Vaginal infections can occur at any age but are most common during the reproductive years (late teens to early 40s). Symptoms often include itching, changes in discharge, and pain during urination. While some patients think they know what they have, it’s best to be seen by an AllCare urgent care physician who can properly diagnose your condition and provide guidance for the proper treatment so you can recover quickly.
Our team of expert physicians will perform an examination and conduct diagnostic tests to determine the cause of your infection. Then we’ll discuss personalized treatment plans—and may even recommend one of our primary care physicians if you are concerned about recurring vaginal infections.
There are several tests physicians may perform to determine the cause of your infection, including vaginal pH testing to measure the acidity of your vaginal discharge, the mixing of a sample of vaginal fluid with a chemical to determine if it produces a strong, fishy odor(whiff testing), and swab testing to examine a sample of vaginal discharge to look for bacteria, white blood cells, or any other indicators of an infection.
Every type of vaginal infection requires a different treatment. For yeast infections, an AllCare urgent care physician may recommend antifungal medications. For bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis, antibiotics are usually prescribed. Follow all instructions carefully to guarantee the infection is fully cured and doesn’t recur.
If your treatment hasn’t fully resolved your infection, if you have new or worsening symptoms, or are concerned because you have recurring vaginal infections, we may recommend you visit an AllCare primary care physician to determine the root cause of your infections and provide an alternate plan of treatment to ensure you get relief.
One of our urgent care physicians will review your medical history and discuss your symptoms, including your overall health and wellness. We may also perform a pelvic exam to look for inflammation and discharge.
We provide education for at-home care to resolve your current infection and prevent future ones. Topics may include medication instructions, personal hygiene, safe sex guidelines, lifestyle changes, and when to return for a follow-up.
Some vaginal infections may clear up on their own, but that’s not always the case. If you notice any of the following symptoms, it’s important to seek urgent care to prevent complications. Below are some typical symptoms for the three most common types of vaginal infections:
Bacterial vaginosis symptoms include:
Yeast Infections symptoms may include:
Vaginal infections can be caused by a variety of factors that disrupt the delicate balance of the vaginal microbiome. Some of the common reasons women get vaginal infections include:

While some vaginal discharge is healthy and normal, if you notice your discharge is becoming thicker, chunky, or appears grey, green, or foamy, it’s essential to seek medical attention to receive the appropriate treatment.
Many of the common vaginal infections have similar symptoms, including burning, itching, pain, and discomfort, which makes them difficult to self-diagnose. An AllCare urgent care medical professional can run the necessary tests and prescribe the correct medications to resolve your specific vaginal infection.
While vaginal infections are common, there are hygiene measures, lifestyle changes, and more to help prevent them, including:
An overgrowth of yeast causes a yeast infection. Symptoms may vary from person to person, and antifungals are usually the first course of treatment. Bacterial vaginosis occurs when there is an imbalance of good versus harmful bacteria in the vagina. Not using condoms, new or multiple sex partners, and even douching can upset the delicate flora of your vagina. BV is usually treated with antibiotics.
Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite and commonly spread through unprotected sex with an infected partner. It’s often asymptotic, but if left untreated, it can last for months or years, increase the risk of getting and spreading another sexually transmitted disease like HIV, and can increase the risk of reinfection or pelvic inflammatory disease, which may result in difficulty getting pregnant and other reproductive issues.
No. While yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis can occur in sexually active people, they’re not considered sexually transmitted infections, so if you contract either of these, your partner will not need treatment. However, if you have trichomoniasis or another sexually transmitted infection, your partner should also be tested and treated. No matter what type of vaginal infection you have, you should refrain from sex for approximately a week during treatment to ensure a full recovery.
