EXPERT CARE FOR VAGINAL INFECTIONS

Urgent Care for Vaginal Infections

Itching, burning, and foul-smelling discharges are all recognizable signs that you may have a vaginal infection. While these symptoms often suggest a yeast infection, other conditions can mimic many of the same symptoms. To ensure your peace of mind, it’s important to identify the cause. At AllCare, our dedicated urgent care physicians can offer a precise diagnosis and a treatment plan for vaginal infections, ensuring you feel comfortable every step of the way.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO HAVE YOUR VAGINAL INFECTION TREATED

Our Approach to Vaginal Infection Treatment

Vaginal infections can occur at any age but are most common during the reproductive years (late teens to early 40s). Symptoms often include itching, changes in discharge, and pain during urination. While some patients think they know what they have, it’s best to be seen by an AllCare urgent care physician who can properly diagnose your condition and provide guidance for the proper treatment so you can recover quickly.

Our team of expert physicians will perform an examination and conduct diagnostic tests to determine the cause of your infection. Then we’ll discuss personalized treatment plans—and may even recommend one of our primary care physicians if you are concerned about recurring vaginal infections.

Vaginal Infection Symptoms by Type

Some vaginal infections may clear up on their own, but that’s not always the case. If you notice any of the following symptoms, it’s important to seek urgent care to prevent complications. Below are some typical symptoms for the three most common types of vaginal infections:

Bacterial vaginosis symptoms include:

  • Fish-like odor, especially after sex
  • A thin, watery, sometimes foamy white, grey or green discharge
  • Pain, itching, or burning in the vaginal area
  • Burning when urinating
  • No symptoms at all

Yeast Infections symptoms may include:

  • No discernable odor
  • A thick or clumpy white discharge
  • Pain and redness in your vaginal area with a white coating around the outside of your vagina
  • Itching
  • Burning, especially during urination or during sex

What Causes a Vaginal Infection?

Vaginal infections can be caused by a variety of factors that disrupt the delicate balance of the vaginal microbiome. Some of the common reasons women get vaginal infections include:

  • An imbalance in your vaginal flora, which can result from not using condoms, multiple sex partners, and douching.
  • Viruses like HPV and herpes which are caused by skin-to-skin contact with someone who has the virus.
  • Irritants, including spermicides, lubricants, feminine hygiene products, latex condoms, and more.
  • An overgrowth of yeast can result from uncontrolled diabetes, antibiotics, hormonal changes, or a weakened immune system.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vaginal Infections

01 Is vaginal discharge normal?

While some vaginal discharge is healthy and normal, if you notice your discharge is becoming thicker, chunky, or appears grey, green, or foamy, it’s essential to seek medical attention to receive the appropriate treatment.

02 How can I tell what type of vaginal infection I have?

Many of the common vaginal infections have similar symptoms, including burning, itching, pain, and discomfort, which makes them difficult to self-diagnose. An AllCare urgent care medical professional can run the necessary tests and prescribe the correct medications to resolve your specific vaginal infection.

03 Can I prevent a vaginal infection?

While vaginal infections are common, there are hygiene measures, lifestyle changes, and more to help prevent them, including:

  • Regularly showering or bathing with mild soaps and drying off after each
  • Avoiding douching, scented products, and feminine deodorants
  • Changing out of wet clothes as soon as possible
  • Washing and drying your hands before touching your vaginal area
  • Reducing stress
  • Managing your diabetes
  • Using condoms
  • Taking probiotics
  • Talking to your doctor about preventative treatments if you’re taking antibiotics
04 What’s the difference between a yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, and trichomoniasis?

An overgrowth of yeast causes a yeast infection. Symptoms may vary from person to person, and antifungals are usually the first course of treatment. Bacterial vaginosis occurs when there is an imbalance of good versus harmful bacteria in the vagina. Not using condoms, new or multiple sex partners, and even douching can upset the delicate flora of your vagina. BV is usually treated with antibiotics.

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite and commonly spread through unprotected sex with an infected partner. It’s often asymptotic, but if left untreated, it can last for months or years, increase the risk of getting and spreading another sexually transmitted disease like HIV, and can increase the risk of reinfection or pelvic inflammatory disease, which may result in difficulty getting pregnant and other reproductive issues.

05 Are vaginal infections contagious?

No. While yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis can occur in sexually active people, they’re not considered sexually transmitted infections, so if you contract either of these, your partner will not need treatment. However, if you have trichomoniasis or another sexually transmitted infection, your partner should also be tested and treated. No matter what type of vaginal infection you have, you should refrain from sex for approximately a week during treatment to ensure a full recovery.
